I believe my low point came when I looked up how to file for disability on the Social Security web site.

My lower back problems have been my burden for over 20 years. The last five years or so have been particularly difficult. I could not get away from the pain – it was constantly in my thoughts. Then I began to lose my ability to walk. I was unsure of the strength and position of my legs. One occupational therapist told me my danger of falling was “off the scale” for someone my age.

I thought, “I’m one fall away from having to use a walker – or being in a wheelchair.”

Now, I have worked very hard to strengthen my back. I’ve been under the care of Dr. Christopher Doerr, a local osteopathic doctor, since 2004. I’ve been through two rounds of his excellent rehabilitation program and kept a membership at his Prescription Gym. I would fight back the pain with exercise and stretching. Alas, the pain would keep coming back. MRIs showed that I had two herniated disks in my back. I could strengthen my back, but that would not keep the torn and bulging disks from pressing the nerve roots that controlled my legs. I was in real trouble.

Chris referred me to a neurosurgeon to evaluate me for minimally invasive back surgery. Because of my heart problems, the surgeon was quick to recommend against back surgery for me. That door seemed closed. Steroid injections were out of the question – that would aggravate my diabetes. Another door closed. If I used stronger pain medication I would have to give up driving and thus no longer be able to work. What could I do?

As you might imagine, I spent a lot of time in prayer and meditation about my condition. I know God gives us challenges sometimes. I asked him for help.

One day I picked up a free publication called Health & Image of Athens. In it was an article called “Non-surgical Spinal Decompression… Is It for You?” The article offered a free decompression treatment form Dr. Simpson. I remembered that Chris Doerr had once asked me if I tried spinal decompression.

So, I called Dr. Simpson and got started with Spinal Decompression. I had immediate results. After the first treatment, I could tell that feeling was returning to my legs. I could feel the ground better. The pain subsided. After three weeks my pain level had gone from 8 to 4 on the usual 10-point scale. My mind cleared and it was easier to concentrate without the constant pain. I had been reduced to 20 hours or less per week at work because I could not bear to sit at the computer any longer. Now I’m almost back up to the full 40 hours per week.

I’ve been recommending Spinal Decompression to anyone who might have a degenerated disk. I’ve told my success story to my primary care physician, my neurologist, and to my orthopedic doctor, and encouraged them all to send back pain sufferers to Dr. Simpson for treatment.

I am sure most of you have heard the saying, “If I had known I was going to live this long I would have taken better care of myself”. As I near my 56 th birthday those words have an all to real meaning for me. I was beginning to think that there was nothing left to do that might help my back pain. I had heard of spinal decompression therapy, and had a niece that, according to her, had had “great results with spinal decompression for her back problems”. As I write this I have had decompression treatments and I cannot believe the improvement in my back! If you are suffering with back pain and think it is something that you will have to live with then I urge you to try DTS Spinal Decompression Therapy and I can think of know better place than Athens Spine Care and Wellness.
